THE INNOVATION TRIBE
Looking Behind the Dynamics of Change and Adaption
Hannes Erler · De Gruyter Brill · 2026
Four decades of innovation practice led to a simple but decisive insight: innovation is never only a question of technologies, processes or methods. In the end, it is always a question of people.

A journey in three movements
Part I · A Change Agent’s Learning Stories
Learning from practice
The first part begins where the learning journey itself began: in industrial practice, among people, projects and unfinished attempts.
It passes through stage-gate thinking, disruption, Open Innovation and Open Space, and moves from internal innovation labs and networks towards increasingly open innovation ecosystems.
Part II · The Philosopher of Reflective Practice
Looking behind processes
In the second part the perspective shifts. Processes and organisational models no longer suffice as an explanation of how innovation actually happens.
Psychological safety, human nature, spirituality, Ubuntu, belonging, imagination, values and systemic thinking move into the foreground — and lead directly to artificial intelligence and to the question of how technological disruption can be reconciled with human dignity.
Part III · The Advocate
From understanding to action
The third part opens the journey forward again: deep learning in a human sense, serendipity, personal growth — and, explicitly, the Homo Innovaticus.
From this emerge the four islands of the innovation journey — Intuition & Serendipity, Vision & Alliance, Open Space Actuation, Orchestrated Change — and the question of what we actually do with what we have learned.
The Homo Innovaticus emerges
The book asks what kind of human being must develop alongside increasingly powerful technologies. Homo Innovaticus is framed here not as a biological new species, but as a cultural possibility: a person willing to cultivate creativity, relationship, intuition, judgment and responsibility.
AI CAN ENLARGE THE SPACE OF POSSIBILITIES. HUMAN BEINGS MUST HELP DECIDE WHICH POSSIBILITY SHOULD BECOME THE FUTURE.
From the book to the Atelier
The book ends. The question does not.
The Atelier Homo Innovaticus grew from the open questions that remained: human judgment in AI, imagination and reality, responsibility, leadership, community and the kind of future we actually want to inhabit.
